We're hosting a new grilling competition to celebrate Saucy Summer featuring our Volcano Sauce sour ale. Do you like coming up with marinades, dips, glazes, or...sauces? We are challenging you to come up with a creative recipe that features Volcano Sauce and enter to get a spot in our Sauciest Grillmaster competition at the Aslin Herndon beer garden on Father's Day (Sunday, June 18).

The event will be held in tandem with our monthly Bazaar Times vendor market, so bring the fam out to cheer you on, get some grub, and do some shopping while you compete for the title of your dreams. Oh, and your very own BIG GREEN EGG® with a custom Aslin grill cover.

WHO CAN ENTER?

It is open to the general public to enter. Everyone can enter! Individual or team entries are welcome, but 3 people max on a team.

WHAT'S THE PRIZE?
The Sauciest Grillmaster will win their very own BIG GREEN EGG®. If a team wins, the prize is one BGE. All entrants will receive Aslin Saucy Grillmaster aprons (1 per team).

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
  • Contestants must bring their own ingredients, equipment including grills, utensils, serving dishes, and fuel. Power will be supplied if approved by Aslin in advance, but extension cords and power strips are the responsibility of the contestants. Contestants are encouraged to bring propane or charcoal grills. 
  • Creativity is encouraged. It's a grilling competition, but that doesn't mean it has to be meat. Or it can be! You're the Grillmaster after all
  • Each contestant must provide at least 200 samples for guests.  All contestants are responsible for the maintenance of proper temperature for serving. 
  • Please have a list of the all ingredients used for allergy purposes on hand. If peanuts or peanut oil is used, please display a warning sign.

SET UP - WHEN AND WHERE
Setup begins at 10am at Aslin Herndon. We'll be in the paved parking lot behind 767 Elden. Check in with an Aslin rep at the entrance (look for signage) and they'll tell you where to unload.

HOW IS THE COMPETITION JUDGED?
Our celeb guest judges will evaluate on a scale of 1-5 (1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest) for each of the following categories:
  • Overall taste
  • Creativity
  • Use of Volcano Sauce in the recipe

NEXT STEPS

Purchase your competitor ticket HERE. (This fee will secure your spot and later will be donated to charity): 

  1. Your ticket will include an order number - fill out the application below and include that order number.
  2. Aslin will confirm and send you next steps and information for the rest of the process.
  3. Apply for the Fairfax Health Department's Plus account for a temporary food permit by JUNE 5. here: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/permits/temporary-food-establishment
    1.  You'll need our event number: HTFE-2023-00123. 
    2. Navigate to "HOW TO APPLY" and then "STEP 2: VENDOR APPLIES FOR PERMIT"
      1. Register for an account or log in.​
      2. Under "Environmental Health" select "Create an Application"
      3. Accept the terms and click "Continue Application"
      4. Click on Temporary Event to expand the choices, then select Temporary Food Establishment
        Permit (TFEP).
      5. Click on the dropdown “Event” menu to view list of open Temporary Events in the County. Select "Sauciest Grill Master".
      6. For more directions, click HERE.
    3. NOTE: The temp food permit costs $40. We will reimburse contestants for that expense at the event.
  4. Come up with your tasty Volcano Sauce grilling recipe and document it. Send that recipe on to Aslin (directions will be provided to contestants once you apply).
  5. Review Sampling Guidelines document.
  6. Get your ingredients and setup together and bring it all down to Aslin Herndon the morning of June 18 to start grilling!
